The latest must have homeware has been taking social media by storm.
The cushions are made from a double-sided sequined fabric that allows you to show a different side to create different patterns and looks. When you pass your hand over the sequins they flip and change colour. The easiest way to describe the effect is that it’s similar to the way velvet changes when it’s been touched. Except the mermaid cushions are better, because it’s done with sequins.
The cushions have the ability to be changed every day with a new pattern or word that takes your fancy.
The cushions were brought into light when Dallas-based FOX 4 reporter Steve Noviello stumbled across the sequin cushions why browsing at Nebraska Furniture Mart store.
After discovering how addictive and easy it was to customize the cushions, he and his friend Michael Shippy shared the reversible effect on camera. The video was then shared on Noviello’s Facebook page where it has been viewed more than 30 million times and earned tens of thousands of comments.
Despite being amazed by the mermaid cushions, they weren’t impressed with the $149.99 price tag for each cushion.
Michael argued ‘But you have to realize that it’s probably a thousand different pillows in one! So really, pennies on the dollar.’
The comments under the video had a mix of admirers and some admitting flipping the sequins would give them anxiety – especially if they flipped the wrong way. There were also others who weren’t impressed with the price.
For the budget-conscious, similar cushions can be purchased on Etsy for $59 US. ($89 AUD)
