A two-legged ‘bunny cat’ called Lil’ Bunny Sue Roux has become Instagram’s latest pet sensation. The cat who is known as Roux online has close to 47,000 followers after her owner Jackie Deak Akey published photos and images of Roux online.
Roux was born with no front legs as a result of a congenital abnormality. In October 2014 Roux was given to a shelter and rescued by Jackie who resides in New Orleans.
Jackie explained to MeowBox that Roux’s missing front legs haven’t stopped the one-year old cat having an amazing happy life.
‘Roux has adapted her special walk by not just walking on her back paws but by keeping the lowest portion of her hind legs flat for more balance, like a kangaroo,’ Jackie explained.
‘Her nubs swing back and forth while she walks but they do not touch the ground.
‘When she wants to move quickly or play (her favorite move is to run after and tackle her sister Graybee) she hops with both back legs in unison like a rabbit. She can move very fast when she wants to!’
Eventually Roux will need to be fitted with prosthetic legs when she’s older, especially if the constant hopping affects her back. But at the moment, Roux’s back legs are quite strong.
It was Roux’s bunny hop that lead to her owner giving the feline 7 names. Jackie revealed to MeowBox ‘[Roux’s] full name is Lil’ Bunny Sue Roux Hendrickson Deak Akey!’
The mixture of names were inspired by a children’s poem (Lil’ Bunny Sue), Roux a New Orleans version of Roo because she jumps like a kangaroo, Hendrikson is the surname paleontologist who discovered the most preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever found and Deak and Akey are the surnames of Roux’s owner Jackie and her husband.
But the two-legged feline is known as Roux to her Instagram fans and despite her lack of two limbs, she lives like any other cat and enjoys activities most 4 legged cats love doing too.
Jackie explains ‘Roux likes eating, sleeping, stretching her nubs, stretching her back legs, hogging bed space, chin scratches, propping her nubs on various things like chair rungs, begging for more treats, pouncing on her sister Graybee, flinging her little mouse toy with her mouth, watching the fish tank, bird watching out the window, and giving scratchy tongue kisses on my nose.’
It is Roux’s jumping skills that saw her following go viral reaching under 50,000 followers in one month with the numbers still growing.
Fans have praised Roux for her zest for life and her owner Jackie for being dedicated to Roux despite her disability.
Life is just PURfect for Roux. She is a well looked after cat despite her hard start to life.
